Stanley Turner’s Entry

Hi! My name is Stanley Turner, and I’m an independent filmmaker from Dallas, TX. I’m currently a junior in high school and I have BIG dreams for this filmmaking journey I’m on, dreams that I know can become a reality sooner than you would expect. First things first though, let’s get to know each other! Like I said earlier, I’m a high school filmmaker, but my creative journey began long before that. I’ve been a storyteller for as long as I can remember. At an early age, I would put on comedy sketches in my living room, create home videos with my brother and friends, and believe me when I say I was (and still am) an avid TV watcher. At the time, all of those things seemed like the hobbies of an imaginative child, but I believe these activities actually allowed me to absorb story structure and a creative spirit that I still carry with me today. And speaking of today, I’m happy to say that I have come a long way from making home videos. Years later and a few short films under my belt, filmmaking has become the forefront of my life, and I’m just getting started! Going forward, I plan to become a writer/director and tell stories with a voice that is true to myself. I feel that I have a unique perspective as a young black male, and I can’t wait to share that perspective with the world. My goal is to create entertaining, thought-provoking media with elements of both comedy and drama— the kind of media that is quick to make you laugh but quicker to make you think. This is a tone that is already present in my work, and I can’t wait to see where else this tone takes me in the future. I can seriously see myself being a name to remember in the filmmaking world!

If I win, the funds will be used to support my endeavors to attend film school and further educate myself in the art of filmmaking. I would also use the funds as a personal foundation of sorts for my career as a writer/director in the film industry.

Story Time at SXSW

Stanley garnered some success with his short film Story Time which debuted at SXSW.

Story Time by Stanley Turner

Story Time is a journey through the classic fairy tales we all know so well, but with a very peculiar twist. On tonight’s episode of his famous children’s special, TV personality Walt Trebek arrives with a wide smile and friendly disposition to read the classic stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, and Hansel and Gretel. But the further Walt reads the more it dawns on him that he’s not reading the kid-friendly stories he thought. What once was an innocent children’s special, has now become a strange, unpredictable roller coaster, certainly not what Walt signed up for. Walt is faced with a choice: continue in the madness or walkway and face the ones behind the camera.
